How to be a Beauty Hoarder on a Budget

Beauty, Budget Beauty,

Does the size of beauty or nail stash determine your social status? Do you have a helmer or Ikea Alex unit dedicated to your Nail polish collections? If you do consider yourselves among the elite of beauty hoarders collectors. With the new dawn of social media outlets allowing beauty bloggers to easily share instant picture of their hauls or stashes and the mass wave of YouTube vloggers taking you through the opening of a box to show you a new lipstick it’s not uncommon that one picks up beauty hoarder tendencies. I mean of course you need every piece of that new MAC collection that came out even though you haven’t even worn the lipstick from the last collection that came out two weeks ago, completely normal!

The other day on Twitter a fellow beauty blogger and I were discussing how bad our beauty hoarding was. It gets to a point where we have to frequently purge our stashes, by just giving it away to our followers or holding blog sales. Since I’m on a mission to pay off over $30,000 in consumer debt (this includes two car payments) by the end of the year I’ve had to rethink my beauty budget. I simply can’t go to CVS and ball out in the beauty section like I used to. First, I told myself okay I’ll just do a no buy every month, but I’m a beauty blogger and that’s clearly not realistic. So, I’ve come up with 5 ways to still be a beauty hoarder but all while doing it on a budget.

1. Share with a friend.

Surprisingly, there is enough lipstick in a tube to split between two people. Since there are so many options we don’t go through a tube of lipstick as quickly as our parents did. A tube of lipstick from MAC or another brand that sells in Sephora can run you about $16-20. Purchase the tube with a friend and split it in half. One of you can keep the lipstick tube and the other person melt theirs down into a lip palette. The is the same for pigments, unless you use the same pigment every single day you will never go through an entire jar. You can always buy the jars that are stackable to save space. I use these all the time when I take my pigments to travel.

2. Use coupons

If you’re lucky enough to have a Bed Bath And Beyond with a beauty section or a Harmon’s consider yourself lucky. You can practically find a Bed Bath and Beyond coupon anywhere. The brick and mortar store even accepts online coupons. The beauty sections at Bed Bath and Beyond usually come out with the newest drugstore beauty collections way before CVS, Walgreens or Rite aid. While you may not find BOGO deals there you can stack coupons. I always keep a $5 off $20 coupon handy along with a 20% off coupon. You can also add in coupons found in the Sundays paper or online. If you don’t have a Bb&B or a Harmon’s you can still grab great deals! If you see a new collection not on sale pick it up and use whatever coupons you have. If that particular brand gets put on a promotion the following week then just being in your receipt and get a price adjustment .

3. Shop blog sales.

You will always find treasures in a blog sale. As I mentioned before often times bloggers purge their stash to make room for new items. The items being purged usually have only been swatched or barely even used. Always purchase from a blogger you trust. If the person is new to you go to through their site and look at their work. While you can’t always gauge their cleanliness you can still get an idea on if you should purchase from that blogger or not. I always sanitize my products with Beauty So Clean and I include extra sanitizing wipes in with every purchase. Bloggers do not sell press samples, because that is a huge no no in our world so you may not find everything your looking for, but trust me there are goodies to be had!

4.Enter Giveaways.

Every where you look someone is giving something absolutely amazing away. I’ve had several give aways and often times the same lucky person ends up winning. There really is no strategy to giveaway as 9/10 the winner is randomly picked by a computer but it’s the cheapest way for you to win great beauty prizes! My fiend over at 15 Minute Beauty Fanatic just held a give away for a Gucci Cosmetic bag and a $150 Sephora Giftcard! When entering giveaway make sure you read all the rules and pay attention to when contest end. You usually only have 24-48hrs to respond and if you miss the deadline you forfeit the prize.

5. Shop Trade Shows

Every year there are industry trade shows. Some for the general public such as IMATS and those for the professionals such as The Make Up. Since you know these shows happen every year start saving up your money early and making a list of products you just have to have. Most times brands are offering up to 40% off which equates to huge savings for you the consumer!

What a fun post! Melody, isn’t the entrance fee to the trade shows pretty pricey? I’ve never looked into going because I assumed, perhaps erroneously, that it cost $100+ just to walk in the door. Hope I’m wrong!

You’re right entry into Trade Shows isn’t cheap, however if you go for just one day the savings to be had or completely worth it!

Great tips. I totally like the splitting the product idea. Those MAC containers are awesome for that. Never shopped a blog sale, but for sure about to keep my open. Great tips.

Sharing is definitely a great tip! I’d never use up a whole MAC pigment so decanting helps cut the cost.

Fantastic ideas! I don’t know if I would want to chop my lipstick up, unless I got to keep the part that lived in the tube lol.

I always forget about couponing. When I was at Target this morning, the lady in front of me saved her $50 worth of merchandise.
