My hair has been a journey! Woo chile let me tell ya! After some trials and tribulations, I think I’ve found a style that finally suits me.(Be sure to check out my 2014 Hair Review here. A couple of months ago I was all about growing out my tapered haircut which you can read about that here. Six months into my grow out I was feeling as if I had hit a brick wall. There was just no style to my hair and so I went to the Natural Hair Salon Duafe in Philadelphia to have it cut back into a tapered cut. Now wait.. before you start giving me the side eye I decided that I still wanted the look of the tapered cut, but I wanted to allow it to grow out in layers. My stylist, Katherine was great and gave me some awesome tips on how to style my hair.
Over the holidays, I had to wash and style my own hair and while I tried my best to recreate the same style from my stylist what I ended up with was a total different style. Taking your hair from a mess of freshly washed curls to a defined masterpiece is simple and doesn’t take as many products as you would think. I started off by doing the L.O.C method on my freshly washed hair. The L.O.C method is the application of you’re Leave In Condition/Liquid, Hair Oil, and Cream. This method allows you seal moisture into your hair and is great for Type 4 curlies.
I used the Carols Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-In Spray Conditioner followed by a light application of a mixture of Argan and Coconut oil. For my cream, I used the Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream. Although this cream isn’t enough to define my hair on its own I love to use it because it’s so lightweight and mixes well with other products that I put on my hair. To create my coils I used the Kinky-Curly Curling Custard and used my finger to create small coils all over my head. Finger coiling did take some time and so I kept a water bottle handy to rehydrate areas of my hair that were beginning to dry before I could actually finger
coil them. For this particular style, I allowed my hair to air dry instead of sitting under the dryer. However, if you do opt to sit under a dryer I would recommend using a low heat setting.
After your hair has dried spray on a light oil glosser to give it a bit of sheen. My favorite product, to use for this is the Shea Moisture Tahitian Noni & Monoi Smooth and Repair High Shine Glosser. I opt to use a glosser instead of more oil because I don’t my hair to be weighed down. Notice in the picture the defined spiraled finger coils. This is a huge difference in comparison to what was seen in the first picture showing my freshly washed hair.
Your curls are looking fabulous!

Thanks Eugenia!
Your hair looks great!
Hmm! I wonder if this would work on my hair texture. I’ve been finger curling my hair loosely before using the diffuser– I’m assuming you’re air drying it? I want to try that kinky curl mustard and see how they work to evenly define my curls!
I love your coils! Very pretty!
Wow, you did that yourself? Looks professionally styled! I love it. I loved the purple, too, if you want to bring that back! 🙂
I have been on the hunt for something that will help rejuvenate and revive my curls getting them back to the ringlets they used to be. I can’t wait for target to open here in a month or so so I can pick up some Carol’s Daughter and try it out. I am finally learning to embrace my curls… but whatever I try is not working.
Your curls look super and very healthy!
I love your hair like that and your makeup is beautiful too!
