All across my social media timelines I’ve been watching my friends with children get excited about the start of summer and plan out their summer itineraries. Thier plans consist of summer camps, swimming lessons, random trips to fun parks, and everything else you can think of to keep a child entertained. Being that we don’t have children our summer plans are pretty simple… continue to go to work and try not to melt in the heat and humidity, but this year I decided to get in on the fun and plan out a fun summer activity that involved our fur babies. Well, to be honest, this was going to mostly be for my benefit as I was looking for a piece of art to hang on a wall in our living room and my budget wouldn’t really let me spend like I wanted to. So, I decided that I’d turn my dogs into little Picasso’s and have them create custom works of art for me. (Want to enter to win a $100 Walmart E-gift Card? Keep reading and I’ll give you the deets on how to enter.)
The Setup:
The setup was pretty simple as we basically used items we already had around the house. You can do this on either grass or concrete. We opted for the grass since we knew it was going to get rather messy. We also put down some painting tarps to keep the grass off the canvases. Using strips of Photography paper we put down different colors of non-toxic acrylic paint that went with our living room color scheme of blues, grays, and warm browns.
Painters At Work:
So, in my head this was going to be super easy. I was going to lay everything out and then have the girls walk through the paint and then onto the canvas. What I just shared with you is an example of me being completely unrealistic. After the first pass through the paint, the girls quickly became “unbothered”, and I really think they didn’t like the feel of the paint on their feet. So I had my husband cut up a few Pedigree Dentastix® and get in the trenches with them (someone had to take the pictures). Once the girls saw that there was an incentive Doggy Art Day took off and the girls literally threw their entire bodies into the project.
To make the projects a little more personal my husband and I even contributed our own hand prints. By the end of Doggy Art Day, the girls were plum tuckered out and in need of some serious baths.
The Art Show:
To allow the paintings to dry, we had the Art Show the next day. To reward the girls for their amazing contributions to the Arts,I whipped up some Stars on a Pedigree Dentastix® treats for the girls to enjoy. These treats are easy to make and are also a great snack to give your pups when they want to cool off from the Dog days of Summer.
The recipe is simple. Blend 2 scoops of low-fat vanilla yogurt with 2 tbsp on peanut butter and one cup of low sodium chicken broth. Fill a star shaped mold with the mixture and then stand one Pedigree Dentastix® up in the mold. If you have a small dog be sure to grab the Pedigree Dentastix® mini’s or cut these in half. Place the mold in the freezer and allow to set for about five hours.
We held the Art Show indoors since it was raining, but set it up so that friends and family could come by and view the art, chat with the artist and even enjoy some snacks. After the rain subsided I presented each one of the girls with their reward and allowed them outside to enjoy it.

Oh this is so clever. It would be fun to treat the pets to some fun and treats outside and do some pet artwork too.
My dogs could create a real classic I bet-a Picasso! That does sound like fun! Of course I would have to get Daisy to quit circling long enough to do her part on the canvas!
I would absolutely love to do this with my dog. I feel like I could just send her outside after a rainstorm and then do a mud painting with her!
