The sage advice of our ancestors is often times passed down from generation to generation. The stories of times long passed that my Grandmother shared helped shape me into the woman that I’ve grown to be. I was told stories of Hard work, Respect, Faith, and Love and how each of these four components either in combination or alone can create the foundation for success and a life well lived.
Growing up in the south Sweet Tea was a staple in most homes. I always knew that when I went to my Grandma Dot’s house she was going to have a pitcher of Iced cold tea waiting. I have fond memories of sitting at the kitchen table while she prepared Sunday Dinner, sipping on a glass sweetened ice tea and listening to her tell me stories of my father growing up, or offering sharing her wisdom and advice on various situations.
I learned many lessons while visiting with my Grandmother. She always taught me to work hard and to do my best no matter how small the task as you never know who’s watching. My Grandmother also taught me respect. To say ma’am and sir and to greet people by their proper titles. She taught me to stay strong in my Faith as faith can see you through even the darkest of times. The most important lessons she taught me was of love as she showed love unconditionally even to strangers.
One of my fondest memories of my Grandmother is of her introducing me to the various ways to drink tea.I remember when she made me my first cup of hot tea and gave me the a “big girl” ceramic mug and I also remember her teaching me how to make homemade Iced Tea. I’m not quite sure if she sprinkled a little bit of extra love in when she added the sugar, but no matter the flavor the tea would always taste amazing. I’ve tried multiple times to recreate the taste on my own, but something is always missing and I’m sure the ingredient is her.
Every time I have a glass of homemade Iced Tea I’m reminded of my Grandmother and all the great memories I have of her come rushing back. Now that I’m older I’ve realized how important it is to slow down and enjoy life’s simple pleasures that we so easily take for granted, like a cup of Iced Tea. The memories I created while drinking Iced Tea with my Grandmother I now create with my husband. Since my mother taught him how to make homemade Iced Tea he now feels he is an expert. Whenever we have homemade Iced Tea I remember to pause and cherish the little moments we share together, even when he’s added too much sugar.
One of my favorite tea brands is Bigelow Iced Tea as it comes in 130 varieties of flavored, green, organic, herbal, decaffeinated, and iced teas. Bigelow Tea is All American: 100% American made by an American Family; an American Company for the American consumer.
Bigelow Tea believes in freshness, which is why they use a special foil pouch to protect the tea from air, moisture and surrounding aromas. They blend a variety of traditional, surprisingly fun, and healthy ingredients and never compromise on quality and taste. It’s why their recipes take their family years to perfect. Sorta like the way my Grandmother made her tea. One day I’ll get it right.
You can create your own special memories from everyday moments by picking up your favorite flavor of Bigelow Teas from your local Walmart. Be sure to check out more Bigelow Tea flavors and brand history at bigelowtea.com.
Share with me your favorite Bigelow Tea Flavor in the comments. If you can’t choose a favorite flavor share a favorite memory that involved Iced Tea.
OMG My grandmother and I would have tea all the time. She actually bought me my first tea set and I have the best memories of growing up with her and our chats over tea. To this day I am a super tea fan. I have over 35 tea varieties in my pantry and quite a few of those boxes are Bigelow. I love making sun tea, so I think I have something to do this weekend thanks to you.
You must be a Southern Girl!! I am from the North… but in the South, the parents and grandparents sure did know how to teach their kids respect. Something all of us should be doing.
By the way… I have a box of that tea in my cupboard right now. Your post is making me want to go brew a pitcher of iced tea right now.
I absolutely love to make sun tea with my boys…they like to participate and thankfully can’t make too big of a mess. I use a ton of green tea for its antioxidants and because I tend to shy away from drinking soda since it is so bad for you. So glad that you have such a great reminder of your great relationship with your grandma. I wouldn’t trade mine for the world!
I love tea, especially Southern Iced Tea. This made me think of my Grandma’s as well. My Grandma Eva Mae was the person who showed me how to make sweet tea and like you said I can never get mine as good as hers. My Grandma Grace always had a ready pitcher at her house when my sisters and I visited. She was also the cafeteria supervisor at my elementary school and because she knew I didn’t like milk, she would always have a cup of tea for me at lunch time. I love all types of tea and the Bigelow Brand is one of my favorites. I love their Constant Comment, which has an orange spice flavor and their Sweet Dreams Herbal Tea. The Bigelow Tea Farm is actually located here in South Carolina where I’m from and you can go on a tour and learn all of the history. You can also by all of the varieties that they sell at the farm as well.
I only have one or two memories of my grandmother, because she passed away when I was 6 years old. So I don’t have all that great of a memory from back then. Can you believe I’ve never had iced tea in my life? I’m a HUGE fan of hot tea (mainly tetley orange pekoe tea) but I haven’t had it cold brew’ed. It’d be so refreshing right now after my run!
I love making tea with my kiddos and its funny as a girl, I loved sitting with my gran in her kitchen at her little table while she baked, and we had tea together. I miss those times so much and I think thats why I always gravitated towards tea and never coffee. So many good memories. She was the first person who introduced me to real iced tea, which I still love and adore to this day. I’ve never heard of Bigelow tea before – I will have to look and see if we have it around here!
I have vague memories of my grandmother. She passed away when I was five. It was my mom who taught me all these life lessons and yes, we love having tea and coffee all the time. My parents live with us and we this every morning.
Iced tea always reminds me of my mom and summer dinners around the table. My grandmother always made a great sweet tea as well. I don’t know about many flavors, but I’ve always loved peach tea. #client
Sadly, we are too busy with our work and gadgets to take time to sit and have tea with Grandma (or other aging relatives). I have fond memories of my grandma and hope my children are creating enough of their own.
It’s funny how our parents (and grandparents) are so wise and teach us so much in simple moments! I love sharing a glass of tea with my family and gaining wisdom and just embracing my time with them, especially when sipping on Bigelow!
It’s amazing what kind of memories tea can bring back. I remember drinking it with my relatives too. I love Bigelow brand – I actually just bought some green tea. I love it extra cold with a lot of sugar!
