With the rise of Social Media, it seems that in the beauty world the larger your makeup stash the better your credibility when it came to knowing anything about makeup. Thanks to Youtuber’s it not unusual to find Ikea Alex Drawer Units packed to the brim with eyeshadows, lipsticks, blush and nail polish. We’ve reached a time where makeup collecting hoarding has become the norm. Admittedly, I own an Ikea Alex Drawer unit and yes it is filled with makeup, but I’m chalking all that up to the fact that I used to be an MUA turned beauty blogger. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it, but in 2016, I’m pledging to live a simpler life and that’s why I’m sharing tips on how to declutter your makeup stash!
It can be a real emotional endeavor to declutter your makeup stash. You’ve invested a lot of money into your collection. You’ve stayed up many a late nights to be sure you’d snag an item from a coveted Ltd. Edition collection. You stalked drug store displays and even did swaps with strangers you met via twitter. I get it your makeup stash has a story, but putting all that emotion aside, you’ve got to come to terms with the fact that makeup does expire and at some point you eventually have to throw it away.
Declutter your Makeup Stash by asking Three Questions.
Decluttering can be simple if you keep these few questions.
- When was the last time you used it? If you haven’t worn a particular product in over a year it’s safe to say that you probably won’t wear it in the coming days either. If it’s something that you think someone else would like maybe give it away to a friend. Just don’t keep it around for sentimental value.
- Has it expired? Makeup doesn’t have a printed expiration date like other consumable items, but it does actually expire. For instance, Mascara has a shelf life of 2-3 months after opening, liquid foundation and concealer 6-12 months and lipstick and lip gloss up to a year.
- Does it fit my current look? As we get older our style tends to change so if you were all about those bright and bold colors in your 20’s you may not be that into them in your 30’s. Keep products that fit your current style. If you like to change it up a bit keep a good mix of bold and natural but anything in excess get rid of it.
If you find that ou can part with many items declutter your makeup stash in stages. Do it once a month or quarterly until you get it down to just the right amount of products that fit you needs.
