Just before Christmas, I became completely fed up with my closet. Seriously I was just over it! I found myself wearing the same things over and over, and whenever I had to pack to go somewhere, it became this huge ordeal as I had to try on everything just to make sure it fit. So one day I came home from work, opened my closet door and told the clothes
“yall ain’t gotta go home, but you gotsta get the hell up outta here!”.
I then began the ultimate purge. Anything that didn’t fit or I wasn’t absolutely in love with had to go. As I was digging through my closet, I became absolutely disgusted with myself. There were so many clothes with tags still on them that I hadn’t a chance to wear before exceeding their measurement limits. Part of me said to keep them because I was planning on getting my weight life together this year, but then reality kicked in, and I reminded myself that I’d been singing that same song for years. To keep myself motivated, I kept telling myself “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit!” while I wasn’t on trial for murder I had to keep telling myself to let that size 6 go! At the end of my purge, I’d whittled two closets down to one.
This closet was bare, or what I consider bare, and within its bareness I found peace. It was then that I realized that I was getting so caught up in having everything and trying to do everything that I forgot to focus on the things that I actually cared about. It was at that moment that I realized that I appreciated just Being Melody and having the bare minimum. This may also stem from my entire year or barely shopping due to living Broke on Purpose and paying off $29K in debt in 10 months, but in purging my closet, I realized that I enjoyed a life where less was more. I enjoyed it so much that I vowed always to keep a closet with minimal options, thus leading to me creating my version of a Capsule Wardrobe.
What is a Capsule Wardrobe?
Simply put a capsule wardrobe is a wardrobe where less is more. You can either go into this with a specially curated defined number of items; you can also build a classic wardrobe based on the pieces you already own. The idea is to keep it simple and wear items interchangeably thus creating a small yet largely functional closet.
My Winter Capsule Wardrobe Essentials
Since it’s winter, I decided to build my Winter Capsule Wardrobe with the limited number of items I already owned as well as purchasing a few additional pieces while all the after Christmas Sales were going on. My style is comfy cute with a hint of edge, and so you’ll see pieces that reflect that. While I plan to go more in depth with my Winter Capsule Wardrobe I wanted to go ahead and share with you all the some of the items that I most recently picked up as there are some awesome sales currently going on.
