Are You Applying Your Skincare in the Proper Order?

What's the proper order for applying your skincare products. www.beingmelody.com

The Beauty aisles can be a scary place, especially if it’s your first time venturing into the world of glam. The skincare aisles are even more daunting with cleansers, night oils, sheet mask, toners, and serums galore. After chatting it up with the beauty concierge, dropping a good portion of your paycheck, and going home with the brand new skin care regimen, you realize you have no idea what product you’re supposed to use first, and you find yourself wondering if the toner should go before or after the serum. This ultimately leads to feeling like skincare is too much work and those products collecting dust on your bathroom counter.

Figuring out the right order to apply you skincare products can be a bit difficult. One of the best ways to remember the order is to think about applying in order of thickness. This means starting with your thinnest product and moving up to thickest.

YOUR MORNING SKINCARE ROUTINE

  1. Cleanser Even if you cleansed your face at night it’s still always a great idea to wash your face again in the morning. You’d be surprised at how much dirt and oil builds up on your face overnight. In the mornings use a gentle cleanser like the ROC Daily Resurfacing Mask which has a side for cleansing and a side for exfoliating. Another great option is the Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Facial Wash.
  2.  Toner Toning is an important part of the skincare process as it helps restore the pH of the skin after cleansing. It also adds a layer of antioxidants and repairing ingredients to the skin. You can use a spray toner like the Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence Toner, which I absolutely love. Or use a more traditional toner which you apply with a cotton pad like the Kiehl’s Calendula Herbal Extract Toner. Whichever toner you choose to use, be sure that they don’t contain alcohol or harsh ingredients that will dry your skin out.
  3. Serum Serum’s are jammed packed full of everything your skin needs so don’t let the hefty price tag deter you. What makes serums different from other items in your skincare regimen is that it has the ability to deliver a higher concentration of active ingredients deeply into the skin. You don’t necessarily need a serum so skipping it is no big deal. One serum I’m particularly loving right now is the Korres Golden Krocus Ageless Safron Elixer
  4. Moisturizer w/ SPF After applying your optional serum or the toner you want to follow up with a moisturizer. Moisturizers are a must even if you have oily skin. Moisturizers deliver proper hydration as well as antioxidants and other targeted ingredients that your skin needs. Using a moisturizer with an SPF is a great way to double down and make sure your skin is hydrated and protected from the sun’s rays. If I plan to venture out of my house and spend a lot of time in the sun I use myROC Deep Wrinkle Day and Night Moisturizers. My other favorite moisturizer is theTatcha Balance Pore Perfecting Water Gel which will have you skin looking exceptionally snatched.
  5.  Eye Cream Eye creams can be used before or after the moisturizer. Some days there’s just not enough caffeine to hide the fact that you didn’t get a good night’s rest. The skin around your eyes is  more tender than other areas of your face and it’s more revealing so it’s a good idea to use an eye cream regardless of your age. The GlamGlow Bright Mud Eye mask is great for when you need to give your eye area a little pep talk. For daily use, I love the Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm.

YOUR NIGHTLY SKINCARE ROUTINE

  1. Cleanser In the evening you want to use a stronger cleanser to help take off all the makeup, dirt impurities. Using a Cleansing Oil to help break down makeup and following up with a cleanser is a great way to ensure that your face is 100% clean. My favorite cleansing oil is the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil followed by the boscia Detoxifying Black Cleanser.
  2. Toning same as the morning routine.
  3. Serum same as morning routine except you can use a serum that targets other concerns than what was targeted in the morning.
  4. Night Cream Night creams are different from your morning moisturizers in that the ingredients are delivered into your skin at a slower rate.
  5. Eye Cream same as the morning routine
  6. Night Oil Night Oils have become every skin care lovers latest obsession. Night oils are collagen stimulating oils that work in conjunction with your skin when it’s in repair mode. Consider them the third shift of your skincare regimen. I have a few night oils that I alternate to target different concerns my favorites areSunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil, the Korres Black Pine Active Firming Sleeping Oil, and the Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil.
