In my attempt to grow out my tapered cut (again) I decided to have some hair installed. I’ve had this Indique Organic Curl for a while but just never used it so since I had an event coming up I decided that this would be the perfect time to rock it. I haven’t seen too many reviews on the Indique Organic Curl hair on the interwebs so I thought I’d share my thoughts on it while also telling you which products have been life savers for maintaining this free spirit hair. I’m currently wearing two bundles of 10-inch and 14-inch hair, and I had it cut and shaped into a style that best fit the frame of my face. If you’re wondering why I had such a drastic difference in the lengths of the hair it’s because I ultimately wanted to go for a layered look and I felt getting two 10’s, or 2 14’s would kinda be a waste.
I’ve worn Indique brand hair several times before, but this is the first time I’ve ever really had to put in work to maintain a style. Let me say it again; THIS HAIR IS WORK! It’s not one of that get-up, shake and go styles. This hair took just as much or even more work than wearing my own natural hair.
[ad name=”In Content Responsive Ad”]Texture: The curls started off big and beautiful and after the first week I noticed the texture begin to change. To maintain the health of my scalp, I decided that I would wash my hair weekly. After the first wash, the texture was completely different. The curls became separated and started to take on more a 4a/4b appearance. I’ll admit this change allowed it to blend easier with my leave out, but I was kind of bummed it didn’t bounce back to it’s original form. I’ve also noticed that I can only go about a week before the curls just look dull and lifeless causing me to have to wash again, which is fine since I want to keep my scalp healthy. However, is why I say this hair has the maintenance schedule of my natural hair.
Shedding: This hair sheds, daily… I’ve had it in for three weeks and it has not stopped shedding yet. I see the worse shedding when I brush it right before washing and during washing which is why you should always have one of these sitting over your drain. After the first week I was completely torn between removing the hair altogether or just sucking it up and dealing with it since I’d paid good money to have it put in. Since I had this hair for a bit before installing it returning wasn’t an option. When I inquired about the shedding to a former Indique Employee I was told that this hair does shed/break a due to its curly nature. They suggested I keep it moisturized and use creams and leave-in conditioners on the hair, so, because I didn’t want to waste the money I spent to have it installed that’s what I did.*Side Note* If you experience excessive tangling or shedding with the Indique line of hair and have a valid receipt and are within a certain time frame you can return the hair. Be sure to see the site for more details*.
To maintain my tresses I’ve been using products that I’ve found my own hair to love. Whenever I have extensions I stay away from products that have alcohol as they do more damage than good. You all know I’m a huge Shea Moisture Fan so of course, I incorporated several of their products as well as the new Darshana Shampoo and Conditioner. I also included the Design Essential Coconut & Monoi line to use as a deep conditioner.
In the mornings I lightly spray my hair with a mix of water and the Shea Moisture Gentle Curl-Cleansing Co-Wash. While the hair is wet, I do a quick finger combing to loosen up the hair a bit. I next follow up with a very small amount of the Shea Moisture Curling Gel SoufflĂ© . I like these products because they add a bit of weight to the hair allowing the curls to form with ease. I use both products sparingly since I’ve noticed with my own hair that a little goes a long way. I also don’t use them every day as I found it gives you at least two days of great hold so, if I use it on Monday I won’t use it again until Thursday. After I apply these products, I don’t touch my hair. I just let it air dry naturally. By keeping my hands out of my hair, I’m reducing the amount of frizz.
To take care of my edges while my hair is braided I’ve been using the Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen Grow & Restore Edge Treatment. I was using this product before the install to address so areas around my edges where the texture had become softer and thinner, so since those areas were left out for this install, I figured I would continue to use it. Have I seen results? Yes! My hair appears to be growing back, albeit a softer texture but soft hair is way better than no hair!
On wash day I’ve been using the Darshana Natural Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner. I’ve loved the Darshana brand ever since they came out with this amazing hair oil that I would use as a Pre-Poo. Since the products are both ayurvedic in formulation and the shampoo is made for gentle cleansing I thought they’d work best on this hair, and they have! You can immediately feel the softness come back after washing. Since this hair loves moisture, I’ve been deep conditioning with the Design Essentials Coconut & Monoi Deep Conditioning Masque. I apply it and leave it on for about 20-30 minutes (no heat) before rinsing and following up with the Darshana Natural Moisturizing Conditioner.
So as I got into week four with this hair I’m admittedly torn on if I should leave it in or take it out. Fall is approaching fast and the weather will be becoming cooler. While I could easily use a diffuser to dry my hair every morning I’m not sure if I want to add that extra step into my routine. My whole purpose for getting the hair installed was to make my life easier and well, that didn’t happen. Another option would be to have this hair made into a wig so that I can throw it on whenever I pleased.
If you’ve tried the Indique Organic Curl Hair share your experiences with me in the comments. I’d love to hear suggestions on how to care for it different as well as favorite products you may be using.
Thanks for the detailed review! I’m thinking of buying it but not sure if its 4b/4c with low lustre or if its more 2-3 type hair with the sheen….
