I love traveling but I absolutely loath the idea of packing. I am a habitual over-packer, even when I try to bring only a few interchangeable outfits, I still overpack. I know I’m not the only one who wishes that you could go to wherever you’re traveling and purchase clothes there. This would make things so much easier, and I would only have to travel with the essentials, you know like my undergarments, makeup, and jewelry.

I have packing my makeup down to a science. The key is to pack your makeup while you’re doing it. This way you won’t ever leave something behind! I also toss in a few lipsticks and an eyeshadow palette for just in case. On a more recent trip, I had a huge scare where I noticed that my checked suitcase was rummaged through and it appeared that my jewelry had was stolen. I say appeared, because I later found my jewelry bag wrapped up in a pair of jeans (where I’d apparently stuck it), but it didn’t help that I’d gone through the five stages of grief before I eventually found the bag the following morning.
Safe Traveling Tips
You don’t have to be dripping in diamonds to practice safe travel habits. In a recent survey conducted by Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, they found that out of 600 married women a quarter of them had lost of piece of jewelry while vacationing. Now when I go on a trip, I take tips from Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company and incorporate them into my everyday life. First off, I make sure to never put my “good” jewelry in my checked bag or my carry on, as carry on’s can sometimes leave your sight if they have to be checked plane side. To me, “good” jewelry is anything of significant sentimental value no matter how small the price. During my scare, I thought the black diamond set that my husband purchased for our first anniversary along with my Pandora bracelets were taken. While these items are replaceable the memories that accompanied the original would be gone forever. Jewelers Mutual also mentioned to “document and take pictures of the items that you’re traveling with.”. This would have been a big help for me when I was trying to remember everything that was missing.
Of course, whenever you travel you’re putting yourself at risk because nothing is fool proof and accidents can happen. This is why it’s a great idea to purchase jewelry insurance before you leave on your trip! If you have a Homeowners or Renter’s insurance be sure to check and see if they cover jewelry. If not you can check out Jewelers Mutual! Jewelers Mutual has been exclusively insuring jewelry for more than 100 years and offers repair or replacement coverage that includes worldwide travel protection for all types of jewelry and watches. Coverage includes loss, theft, damage and mysterious disappearance (unexplained loss). You can even get an extra layer of protection for things that your current plan doesn’t cover. We’re already talking about working this type of coverage into our budget since my husband travels so much for work.

Oh my gosh! I can’t blame you for being upset when you thought your jewelry was stolen. We do hear horror stories when your luggage gets that random check and something goes missing. Glad your story had a better ending!
What I do is keep my jewelry separated by type. Earrings, Necklace, Bracelets, etc., in their own baggies. I then put those baggies in an eye glass case and keep them with me in my carry-on. Anything of value, monetary or sentimental, I keep with me and deal with them at check in if they have to go through my bags. I’d rather they do it in front of me than behind the scenes!
As an over-packer myself, I can relate to your feelings on packing 🙂 While I don’t have expensive pieces of jewelry, I do worry that the sentimental pieces would be lost when traveling, so I usually just take the necklace or bracelet that I am wearing, and maybe another piece or two that I take in my carry-on.
I can imagine your fright when you thought your jewelry was missing from your checked baggage. A few years ago I learned a hard lesson on checked baggage safety. We were taking a non-stop cross country flight from Philadelphia to Los Angeles, so foolish, naive me, I packed those two checked bags to the gills, one with clothes, and the other with clothes, toiletries and with everything from my husband’s medications, work gate-badges, my purse, and so forth in them. Guess which bag never made it to Los Angeles, and was never located? The one with all of the important things.
For men or women who travel with jewelry, I can see this insurance being very beneficial, both for when the unfortunate happens and for peace of mind knowing if something is lost or stolen, there will be recourse for the replacement of those items.
Your outfit is so cute. This is a handy fix. I don’t travel much but when I do I will keep this in mind.
Completely agree with you about the items – “things” can always be replaced but it would be the memories truly lost. I feel bad that so many women lose their jewely whilst travelling. I do get it though. I think it’s why I’m so reluctant to splurge on myself, becuase I’d be too scared to wear it for fear of losing it!
These are grea tip though – thankfully I’m already a good packer and travel light!
I am also a habitual over packer. It is so hard for me to know what I’m going to feel like wearing while I’m away, so I like to have options. How scary to think that you’d lost some precious pieces of jewelry. I recently got a new jewelry case to use for travel. It separates by earrings, bracelets and necklaces and folds up.
Alex and Ani bracelets are my FAVORITE! I am loving your bracelet stack. These are good ideas for travel. I usually plan my outfits around a pair of earrings. It helps me streamline my wardrobe!
