I honestly can’t believe I’m about to say this but er umm. I’m in love with these MAC Retro Matte lipsticks!! When Retro Matte was first released, I didn’t grab any because I’d drastically cut back on the amount on makeup I was purchasing and was more focused on skincare. Lucky for me MAC released twelve new Retro Matte lipsticks in an array of neutral shades that will either be screaming YESS or leave you questioning your color choices.
[ad name=”In Content Responsive Ad”]MAC sent over five shades of the Retro Matte lipsticks to Being Melody Headquarters for me to try out and I picked up four more shades at my local boutique. I spent a good bit of time wear testing these shades and wear time is well over 8hrs including eating and drinking. I found that the best way to apply these is to put them line your lips using the tip of the applicator and then fill your lips in with the color. DO NOT PURSE YOUR LIPS TOGETHER. Pursing your lips together will ruin the finish, it’s better to let them dry down naturally.
Compared to other matte liquid lipsticks on the market this formula is definitely my favorite. To me, the formula falls in between the Kat Von D Everlasting liquid lipsticks (I hated this formula) and the Nars Cosmetics Velvet Lip Glide It dries down pretty quickly and gives your lips a saturates your lips in a long lasting opaque “liquid suede” finish.
I normally do full-face swatches, but since these were matte and you need to allow the proper time for them to dry for best wear I decided to spare my lips and swatch on my arm instead. In true MAC form, several of these colors aren’t your typical neutral shades and while I love the formula some of the colors had to grow on me. I am deeply in love with Young Attitude and Uniformly fabulous. I can also see Chocotease being an amazing go to boss up brown.
From L-R: Carnivorous (blackened red), Chocotease* (warm chocolate brown), Dash O’ Spice* (yellow beige), Espresso (deepened chocolate brown) , Flesh Stone* (greyed neutral brown), Simply Smoked (brown taupe) , So Me (greyed plum), Uniformly Fabulous (blacked purple), and Young Attitude (blackened teal)

The Breakdown
This is probably the best Matte Formula I’ve found in a liquid lipstick. The formula is long lasting and it does not dry your lips like the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks or the Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge liquid lipstick. Each Retro Matte lipstick is priced at $21.00/5oz. each which is comparable to other liquid lipsticks on the market.
