If you asked me about my street style, I’d say you’re probably going to find me wearing something with camouflage. Did you know Camo is considered a neutral? At least it should be. Navigating life is tough, and with my military family upbringing, I feel drawn to the safety of camouflage. It reminds me of my father. Finding my way hasn’t been easy though. I had a pretty simple and privileged childhood compared to others even though it still had its ups and downs.. I dealt with my fair share of bullying/teasing for my skin disorder and even went through bouts of insecurity when one day in my fourth-grade class I noticed that my legs were quite larger than my Caucasian classmates. After this, I never wanted to sit Indian style as it made them seem even bigger than they were and with being one of the only African American girls in the classroom I didn’t want to draw any more attention to how I was different. Now as a full-fledged somewhat functioning adult I embrace who I am and look for the lesson in each experience.
Growing up my experiences don’t even hold a candle to that of the young kids on “The Chi” a new series on Showtime, created by Emmy Award winner Lena Waithe. While they’re trying to make it day to day during my childhood one my biggest concerns was how far could I get on Oregon Trail without my players dying from dysentery. If you haven’t had a chance yet to watch The Chi, it’s a show that follows the lives of four Southside Chicago natives, and how through varying circumstances, they all become connected.
I was excited to see familiar faces like Jason Mitchell, who starred as Eazy E in “Straight out of Compton”, and Alex R. Hibbert, who stared in “Moonlight” and most recently “Black Panther”. This show has very reminiscent vibes of “The Wire” which I thoroughly enjoyed. There are so many things I want to talk about concerning the show, but I promise I won’t divulge any spoilers.

My type of standing on the block is a bit different than Emmet and Coogie in The Chi. I lean a bit more towards standing outside the coffee shop waiting for my friends for our coffee date!I feel The Chi is a series we’ll be discussing over our lattes on more than one occasion.
Have you had a chance to catch up on The Chi? What are your thoughts on the show? Are you rooting for Brandon and Jerrika like I am?
