You ever just look in your closet and ask yourself what you were thinking when you bought a particular article of clothing. I’ve found myself doing that a lot more than usual lately which makes me kick myself for deviating from my capsule wardrobe.
Admittedly I’m not too happy with my handbag collection. While I feel I have some very nice pieces there a few in there that were impulse purchases that I don’t think ever sparked joy. Sure, I can sell them on a consignment website like PoshMark, but what stays the forefront of my mind is what else I could have done with that money had I not spent it on a bag I didn’t want.
Moving forward, to avoid the urge to randomly purchase items that I will no longer have an interest in later I’ve been doing two things:
- I give myself time to decide if I want that item. To do this, I first add the item to my “wish list” or tag the item as a “favorite” on the website if it allows. If it doesn’t, I simply add it to a private Pinterest page.
- I calculate what my total cost per wear would be. The cost per wear is how many times you would wear the item divided by the overall cost. The lower the number, the better.
By giving myself time to get over the first stages of impulse buying and then considering how many times I would wear that item based on what is already in my closet helps me determine if I will be making a solid investment or just wasting my money.
This practice also comes in handy for when a particular site is having a sale.
